Description
Funeral March
Composed by Benjamin Britten
Completed by Bernard Hughes
Intermediate Level
4′ duration
“Funeral March is a completion of a piece started by Benjamin Britten in 1938, but never finished by him. A pencil sketch of the first 17 bars of music for brass octet with timpani, with a couple of scrawled sentences of notes about its continuation, was retained by the archive at the Red House. In 2022 I was invited by Onyx Brass, with the agreement of Britten Pears Arts, to make a completion, which extends the piece to 46 bars, realising Britten’s scribbled intentions. It was premiered by Onyx Brass at Snape Maltings as part of the Aldeburgh Festival on 29 June 2025.” – Bernard Hughes
